: : ? 05 students, staff and the community, unique opportunities to experience, participate in, and to empower themselves through the arts. The arts is a powerful means to develop the emotional intelligence needed to harness the knowledge and skills we acquire as we go through life. Our emotional maturity needs to be nurtured as much as our intellect, and our programme will allow for ample opportunities to experience something different. In addition to operating three theatres as producing and receiving houses, drama and dance studios, and the UJ Art Gallery, a robust range of arts platforms are offered on all four UJ campuses. Through the UJ Arts Academy, students, alumni and staff have access to a range of free dance and acting classes, poetry and drumming sessions, or the chance to audition for theatre productions, the UJ Choir, UniJoh Chorale, jazz band, the wind band or orchestra. Our student offering would not be complete without the popular UJ Can You? student talent competition, presented in partnership with UJ Student Affairs. Art Much? has proved to be a fitting mechanism to rethink and reinvent the value proposition of arts and culture as a driver of creativity in the higher education sphere and in the local arts industry. We extend our thanks to our esteemed contributors, who make this issue more than worth the read! :: Pieter Jacobs Head: UJ Arts & Culture Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture EDITOR’S NOTE
