37fiWhtdoeswinningtheStndrdBnkYoungartistsawrdmentoyouebThisawardcouldnothavecomeatabettertimeinourcareersitissomethingIhavealwaysdreamtofwinning.ReceivingthisawardhasgivenmegreatcondenceandpridethatourworkhasbeenacknowledgedasimportantandnecessaryinSouthAfricanart.TobegivenanexhibitionspaceinGrahamstownwiththevastnumberofviewerswhowillseetheworkhasgivenmegreatambitiontoprepareashowthathighlightsourcareerandtoimpressthosewhodonotknowus.HusainandIhaveputsomuchtimeandenergyintoourpracticalworkthatwehaveneglectedtoprepareacatalogueoranypublicisedmaterial.TobeawardednancialsupportforacatalogueistheprizeIammostgratefulfor.Ifeelthatwehavedonesomuchtothispointandtohaveitmemorialisedinthiswaywilladdanewdimensiontoourworkandcareers.fiWhtdrivesmotivtesndinspiresyouebMyreligionandspiritualbeliefinmyopinionisthemostimportantasitguidesmylifecreativeprocessandsubjectmatter.IloveartandeverythingthatcomeswithitattimesitisextremelycontroversialandchallengesmybeliefsbutIammotivatedtondabalancebetweenreligionandart.MycommunityandculturetraditionsandreligionareareasthatIfeelthathavenotbeenexploredandthereisanopportunitytoportrayideastopeoplewhohavenotencounteredthembefore.fiTellusbitboutyourrt-mkingprocess.ebHusainandIbothgraduatedwithindividualbodiesofwork.WhenwewereapproachedbytheGoodmanGalleryin2007weproposedanideatocollaborateandmakearttogetherthersttimeweeverworkedtogether.GrowingupHusainandIwereclosebutalsoapart.Wewenttoschooltogetherlivedinthesamehousebutwehaddifferentfriendslikesandinterests.Thereforewedevelopeddifferentidentitiesandskillswhichwethenbroughttogetherwhenworkingtogether.HusainspecialisedinPhotographyandIallowhimtomakealltheimportanttechnicaldecisionswhensettingupashoot.IspecialisedinPrintmakingandthereforehavealotmorefreedominthepost-productionandprintingofthework.Webothcontributetothesubjectmatterandeditingofthephotographs.HusainandIalwaysdiscussnewideasandlocationstoshootwespeakveryvisuallytoeachotherandinthatwaygetlotsofideasfromourconversations.WealsousepopularculturethemediaandHollywoodasinspirationbecausethosearethethingsthatinterestouryouthandinformthenextgeneration.fiWhtdoyouwnttobewhenyougrowupebAllIwantformyselfistoleaveapositivelegacyforSouthAfricanartandtoinspireothersespeciallytheyouththrougheducation.IwouldlovetolectureandmakeartuntilIretireeitherone.fiWheretofromhereebAsayoungboyIhavealwayssetgoalsformyselfshortandlongterm.IamproudtosaythatIhaveachievedmanyofthemandthereforeIamsettingnewonesasIgoalong.Someofthemincludedcompletingmyeducationmydegreeandpostgradstudies.IwouldliketodomyMastersinthenearfuture.IalwayswantedtoexhibitintheVeniceBiennaleandtohavemoresoloshowsinternationally.
